The administration here at Francis Hates Everything is proud to announce that we’ve finally moved away from merely featuring other people’s artwork. Today marks my first foray into original content! Here it is (click to embiggen):
As you can clearly see, here we have an ensemble picture featuring Francis over on the left wielding dual pistols and wearing his favourite vest. Next to him is… I think it’s a hunter. Next to whatever that is is the tank, with his enormous fists and tiny tiny head. Above them (on a rooftop, maybe?) is a Boomer and a Smoker. The Smoker is apparently pulling… Zoey? Yes, he’s pulling Zoey up the building by her hair. Just like in the game. Finally, we have everyone’s favourite claw-handed zombie horror, the Witch! The reason her hands are so big is… um..m perspective. They’re closer to you, so they’re larger. And scarier. Yes.
On second thought, I think I’ll let people with actual talent and more then just a green crayon do the drawing from now on.
According to today’s official L4D blog post, there is a “small, but very large gameplay change’ coming concerning melee in versus mode. I’m thinking a nerf to Survivor melee, possibly preventing them from reloading while performing their melee attack. I suppose we’ll see later this evening! In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions of their own?
Last time, I discussed the various tactics that I’ve seen/used for taking on the Witch in versus mode. Experienced players can definitely make short work of her and if the Infected team isn’t paying attention they can be caught on the back foot, putting them at a disadvantage. The purpose of this article is to give players some pointers and ideas on how to turn Witch encounters back into something that the Survivors should be very, very afraid of. It’s not the Survival pack (I suspect we’ll have to wait until April for that), but a new patch/update has been released for Left 4 Dead. Here’s the rundown: Read the rest of this entry »
Several people have asked me for a list of the sound files that contain Francis’ “I hate…” lines. I’ve finally gotten off my arse and done something about it. Behold: The List of Stuff Francis Hates. The new page is self-explanatory: It’s a list of all the sound files in which Francis says “I hate…” something. I’m pretty sure that it’s not complete, so if anyone knows the names of other sound files that match the criteria, please email me and I’ll add them to the list.
Oh, and you may have noticed that I’ve added a permanent link to the list at the top of the page. Enjoy!
Ahh, the Witch. When Left 4 Dead came out, she was toted as being the scariest adversary in video gaming. I certainly agreed with that to begin with, but now I think otherwise. I have become blazé, maybe even overconfident in my treatment of L4D’s most powerful zombie. One-hit kills? I have a shotgun, lady, and I give as good as I get. Crowning the witch has become almost automatic in campaign mode. An action to be performed out of habit, without a second thought.
There’s not much to be done about this. Unless the witch gets a serious buff from Valve in a future update, she’s not ever going to cause a problem for players who have spent enough time running up and down the zombie-infested wasteland to know which end of their gun is the dangerous end, and where to stick it for maximum effect.
Versus mode is another matter entirely. Unless the survivors work together the infected team can easily wreak havoc whenever a witch shows up. Similarly, the opportunities a witch creates for the infected can be wasted if they’re not on their toes. Here’s a breakdown of some of the best (and worst) tactics I’ve seen for the Survivors. Part 2 will deal with the Infected counter-tactics. Read the rest of this entry »
The Survivor’s Diary is a great Left 4 Dead podcast that I started listening to a couple of weeks ago. Their site has been down for the last week or so because of arcane technical issues, but now it’s back! I thoroughly recommend going over and checking it out.
